X‑Men 2099 #1 opens by dropping you straight into the fractured, corporate‑ruled future of the Marvel 2099 universe. The original X‑Men are long gone, and mutantkind has splintered into scattered, hunted pockets. Out of that chaos rises a new team—one that doesn’t begin as a team at all.
The story follows Xi’an Chi Xan, a former mutant revolutionary turned hardened wanderer, as he travels the wastelands searching for the remnants of his old movement. When he discovers that his former followers have been wiped out, he pivots toward rebuilding something new. His first recruits—Luna, Junkpile, Skullfire, and Bloodhawk—are all damaged, distrustful, and carrying their own baggage, but Xi’an pushes them toward a shared purpose: restoring mutant dignity in a world that’s written them off.
The issue ends with the group reluctantly united, not out of idealism but survival, setting the tone for a harsher, more morally gray X‑Men era. It’s a classic 90s launch: fast, dramatic, and built around the idea that the X‑Men legacy has to be reinvented rather than inherited.
